Welcome to one of my favorite rooms in my apartment and probably the only room that stays clean more often than not: my Closet.
I spent a good deal of time deciding what I needed to make my closet work for me. I wanted to get everything I needed to get dressed, with the exception of a few things that are housed in my dresser in my bedroom, into my closet. I am the kind of person who needs to see everything out there in my face or I forget that I own it, so it was very important for it to be organized and right there in my grasp. So I had to find a system that would accommodate many things in a relatively small space.
This drawer setup is something that took a lot of planning out and measuring and standing in the isles at target scratching my head… but in the end I am very pleased with the choices I made.I used the
Itso Cube with Self in espresso and the
Itso Fabric Storage Bins in Khaki for my tights and scarves.I have to say I really love these because they pull out so I can take out the fabric drawer and carry it into my bedroom if I don’t exactly know what I’m looking for. I also used this
Drawer Organizer with 3 Compartments for keeping my tights nice and organized in their drawer. It fits snugly into the drawer, but it did fit (with a little force)! The other drawer organizers that I used were also from Target and they fit perfectly (with no force) and I was able to stack more than one in a drawer to get even more storage out of the space I had.
For my socks, bating suits, and belts I decided on the
Itso Cube with 2 Drawers in espresso. I think these are so sleek and sophisticated looking and they work great for what I needed in this space. I used a number of different drawer dividers, also from Target, to organize my belts. The bathing suits and socks really just defy organizing, so I didn’t push the issue with them. You might also notice the piece of art leaning against the wall. It is a wonderful cyanotype done by my friend Ashley. It's one of my favorite in my art collection.
Next up was the daunting, yet incredibly important, task of organizing my shoes. I did this with a number of shelves and with one bin that contains flip flops, flat sandals, and house shoes (not pictured).
I used the
Closetmaid “Shoe” Shelves in espresso for my shoes. These work great for flats, but when it came to anything with a heel, which let’s face it is 90% of my shoes, I had to remove the middle shelf. This is kind of annoying and when I eventually move I’ll probably make something (read: beg Nic to make something) to fit my heels a bit better. But this works for my purposes now, and it also forced me to sit in my closet and have a staring contest with my shoes in order to weed out the ones that I really just don’t wear and need to give away. It’s so nice to be able to finally see all of my shoes. I used to have them all in bins and I had to dig for shoes. It was so frustrating and meant that I rarely wore some of my favorites because I couldn’t see them so I just didn’t bother digging. Now they are all there looking so pretty.
I color organize my clothes. Yeah. All of the short-sleeved tops are together in rainbow order, then my skirts in rainbow order, then my long-sleeved tops and blazers in rainbow order, and finally my sweaters are folded in a hanging sweater thing, also from Target, in rainbow order. It makes it so much easier for me to find what I’m looking for. I can go straight to short-sleeved and know that that blue top is going to be with the other blue tops. I can’t imagine getting dressed if it wasn’t organized like this. I’d never ever find anything!
I was lucky enough to score a bundle of really great wooden Lilly Pulitzer hangers when one of their via stores was selling them off after the brand switched to new hangers. Unfortunately I didn’t get quite enough, so half of my closet is still left on plastic hangers. I’ve got my eyes peeled for more though. I just love how clothes look on wooden hangers. So classy. I also love how then entire left side of my closet is dresses… and then there are my pin-up costumes and recent dry cleaning that needs to be sorted back to their appropriate places.
I was a photography minor in college, almost a double major, so I spent a lot of time in the photo department and a lot of my friends from college are photographers and artists. This means that I was lucky enough to leave college with a nice collection of art. This photograph was taken by my friend Olivia. I think it’s so elegant and timeless. I spend way too much time in my closet and thought it lacked art and as I went through my collection of art that I have yet to place somewhere this one screamed out for the coveted space in my closet.
And so ends your tour of my closet. I hope you enjoyed it! How do you keep you closet organized?
